My friends know that I’m not a big fan of Flash, but when I heard this news it did make me tingle a little bit inside.
Adobe’s release of Adobe Acrobat 9 will allow you to embed Flash SWF’s into your documents. This will certainly change the way we think of presentations.
“Adobe Systems on Monday announced a major upgrade to its Acrobat software for creating and sharing documents. Adobe Acrobat 9 includes native support for Flash and other rich media plus new features for collaboration and sharing. Concurrent with the new software, Adobe has launched Acrobat.com, a Web site offering a suite of hosted services centered around the software.”
When taking Adobe Illustrator classes in college, I would receive PDF tutorials from the professor. The tutorials would multiple diagrams per page. At the time this was just a revolutionary way to save paper and cut costs. Now the same professor will not only continue to save paper, but will also be able to cut the number of digital pages in half (maybe more than that) by using interactive diagrams, slideshows, video instructions, audio, and more.

Thinking past the college class, it will be interesting to see how people grasp this new feature and use it to their advantage. I expect to see some exciting software instructions, and design briefs with video / audio explanations, along with a lot more stuff.
One thing I’m interested in is how the new PDFs with embedded flash will read when printing. Will Adobe stamp a big logo in the middle, an ‘X’, an error? Or maybe they’re going to merge with Epson and create video printers… I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Flash was just one key announcement during the launch of Acrobat.com, “an online portal that features an online word processor, web conferencing, and the ability to generate and share PDF files.” The company plans to release Acrobat 9 Pro for Mac OS X for $449, with upgrades priced at $159.
